Welcome | The Secret Linguist

how it started

The Secret Linguist started out in 2016. The idea stemmed from that I could not pinpoint where I was ‘from’, having lived in a handful of different towns and cities. What are the elements which make up identity? I am a languages graduate. Languages are beautiful, but most people tend to stick to one. Throughout this journey, my aim is to persuade more to ditch their monolingual life.

Written by Finn in Berlin with a splash of British humour.

become a linguist

We all have the innate ability to learn a language. As a child we have a particular infinity with language learning and repeating what we hear. This is why children are so funny and honest.

Not everyone is going to be a great linguist. But everyone can train the left side of their brain and use it to their advantage. There are endless benefits to learning a new language which I hope to uncover; persuading you to ditch your monolingual life, and to become more creative by doing so.

Become a linguist or polyglot; the benefits are always rewarding.

Not only will you find out how to make the most of learning a new language, this community is a place to exchange ideas and to stimulate discussion on language, culture, and travel.

City guides and travel tips

With travel becoming one of the main reasons we learn languages, The Secret Linguist has several city guides to help you on your way. Inspired by my own personal experiences of finding articles with insider tips for my trip to New York City, I decided to pay that forward and write about the travel tips and local joints you need to discover.

cultural learnings

We take on the culture and history of a country by learning their language. In day-to-day words, there are many references and ‘foreign’ words which we use very often but are not aware of their meaning or origin. By learning other languages we get to understand our own better and to master it.
